The Coastal Cairns & Tropical North Queensland
Cairns straddles the Coral Sea and has a plethora of photo spots from the epic to the sublime. From a sunrise hot air balloon flight with Hot Air Balloon Cairns to walking on the sand at Nudey Beach on Fitzroy Island you’ll be spoilt for choice.
For those wanting to capture the region’s lush rainforests you can’t go past the Atherton Tablelands. Just a 90min drive from Cairns there are numerous hiking trails that wind through waterfalls and over rolling hills that create mystical scenes.
Another highlight of the region is Myall Beach in Cape Tribulation which offers a picture perfect palm and where rainforest meets reef. Here you can walk on a boardwalk through mangroves to reach an open beach that stretches for 2km. If you’re up for an early start then head here at sunrise to watch the sun dip behind the mountains across the ocean and take advantage of the rockpools that are filled with smooth stones making it a landscape photographers dream scene!
The quaint resort town Photography Cairns of Port Douglas is also worthy of some memory card space. With a cosmopolitan vibe and busy stalls at Rusty’s Markets it has a cool little feel to it that you can’t help but fall in love with.
After getting a grasp of the fundamentals, try to experiment with new genres of photography. This can help you determine which type of photography you want to focus on and will accelerate your growth. For example, if you are accustomed to shooting landscapes, you could try experimenting with portraits or food photography.
Finally, learn to work with a client and understand the business of photography. This will help you build your reputation and establish a solid client base.
Many photographers start out by working part-time while maintaining their regular job or schooling. It can be difficult to get enough work as a photographer to make ends meet, especially in the beginning. You can find more work by networking, posting your work on freelance websites or by advertising your services.
Photographer salaries vary by location and employer. According to Indeed, the average salary for a Photographer is $25 per hour.
